Etna: snowy wood
This path gives the possibility to the visitors to taste, a few to the time, the different faces that show the volcano. The path underlines the great strength and the beauty of the lava. On the provincial road “Zafferana-Rifugio Sapienza”, at about 6 km from the beginning, the is the deviation for Pomiciaro mountain. Arrived at Val Calanna (1350 M.) enter to the steep path in the west part of he square. Continuing among woods of beech tree and lava grounds surrounded by brooms arrive at Pomiciaro mountain and at the cross of Zoccolaro mountain. From the top, it commands over the “Valle del Bove”, the “Val Calanna”, the “Serra delle Concazze”, the “Pizzi Deneri” and the zone of the “Crateri Sommitali”. It is necessary to have correct mountain equipment to repair from the cold and it is also essential the use of trekking shoes. It is important also to have some water, a torch, a raincoat. A binocular will allow appreciating better the view. It is recommended, for precaution, to follow the route layout by the trail signs. The path is long about two km; it is an excursion not too difficult and it could be crossed in two- three hours.
Questo sentiero da la possibilità ai visitatori di gustare, poco alla volta, i diversi volti che mostra il vulcano. Il sentiero evidenzia la grande forza e la bellezza della lava. Sulla provinciale Zafferana-Rifugio Sapienza, a circa 6 Km dall'inizio, si segue la deviazione per Monte Pomiciaro. Si giunge al belvedere sulla Val Calanna (1350 m) e si accede al ripido sentiero nella parte ovest del piazzale. Proseguendo tra boschi di faggio e terreni lavici circondati interamente da ginestre si giunge a Monte Pomiciaro e alla croce di Monte Zoccolaro. Dalla cima si domina la Valle del Bove, la Val Calanna, la Serra delle Concazze, i Pizzi Deneri e la zona dei Crateri Sommitali. E’ necessario essere equipaggiati con la giusta attrezzatura da montagna, per ripararsi dal freddo, è inoltre indispensabile l’uso di scarpe da trekking. E’ importante anche attrezzarsi con acqua, torcia elettrica, impermeabile; un binocolo permetterà di apprezzare meglio lo spettacolo. Si raccomanda, per precauzione, di non uscire dal tracciato segnalato dai segnavia. Il sentiero è lungo circa due chilometri; è una escursione non molto difficoltosa e si può percorrere in due - tre ore

Seven Km. from Zafferana along the road that leads to the Sapienza refuge arrive to the height of plan of the Vescovo ( mt. 1370). Parked the car the nature trail of the Park of the Etna that cuts transversally the plateau in direction of an ample wooded canyon can be taken. Gone beyond the signal of border of the "A" zone of the park the route is maintained for a minute under the shade of beech trees and then faces with a series of stairs the steep slant that parts from the water of the “Rocca degli Zappini”. Here it’s worth stopping for some minute to observe, with precaution, a fall of smooth basalt that throw headlong few M from a secular beech tree, to the feet of which gush out a vein of water. From some time, the spring has been systematized and it allows now to the excursionist to refresh after the first steep part of the itinerary. Continue on the path that from this moment it becomes gradually more sandy and that winds among the beeches and brooms up to the Salifizio greenhouse ( M. 1720). Overlooking from the crest appears the ample scenery of the “Valle del Bove”, with its lavas, the mighty dikes, and the impressive expanse of the lava casting of the 1991/1993. Cross the saddle on which you are situated following an evident trace of path that is gone away to your left, looking the valley, and after have passed a sandy canyon you immerse yourself in a grove of beeches that will conduct you up to the ancient sinking. Arrived within the valley you will find before the imposing pile of recent lava. It is possible to prolong the itinerary in the valley reaching the zone where the Cutrona cave is found to the base of the canyon of the Montagnola..
Si percorrono in auto circa sette chilometri da Zafferana lungo la strada che conduce al rifugio sapienza e si arriva all'altezza di piano del Vescovo ( mt. 1370). Si lascia la macchina e si imbocca il sentiero natura del parco dell'Etna che taglia trasversalmente il pianoro in direzione di un ampio canalone boscato. Oltrepassato il segnale di confine della zona "A" del parco il tracciato si mantiene per un tratto all'ombra di faggi e quindi affronta con una serie di scalini il ripido pendio che separa dall'acqua Rocca degli Zappini. Qui vale la pena di fermarsi per qualche minuto per osservare, con cautela, una cascata di basalto levigatissimo che precipita a pochi metri da un faggio secolare, ai piedi del quale sgorga una vena d'acqua. Da qualche tempo la sorgiva è stata sistemata e consente adesso all'escursionista di rinfrescarsi dopo la prima ripida impennata dell'itinerario. Proseguite sul sentiero che da questo momento diventa gradatamente sempre più sabbioso e che serpeggia tra faggi e ginestre sino alla serra del Salifizio (mt. 1720). Affacciandosi dalla cresta si svela l'ampio scenario della Valle del Bove, con le sue lave, i poderosi dicchi, l'impressionante distesa della colata lavica del 1991/1993. Percorrete la sella su cui vi trovate seguendo una evidente traccia di sentiero che si diparte alla vostra sinistra, guardando la valle, e dopo aver superato un canalone sabbioso immergetevi in un boschetto di faggi che vi condurrà fin dentro l'antico sprofondamento. Arrivati dentro la valle vi troverete dinanzi l'imponente ammasso di lava recente .E’ possibile prolungare l'itinerario all'interno della valle raggiungendo la zona in cui si trova la grotta Cutrona alla base del canalone della Montagnola.
